notes from connecticut
This morning a woman from the Register took my picture standing next to a sale sign in downtown New Haven. She was excited that I was from Chicago and more excited my family was from Durham. I looked terrible - I have a cold and I hadn’t bothered to dress nicely and was probably slouching, per usual. We made the joke once each about not being able to stay out of the papers (my mother on the front page of the Journal last week for resigning from her job, my brother somewhere in the Courant last month for occupying a highway exit ramp). The google image search result occurred to me only after I’d given the photographer my name.
I spent the rest of the day thrift store shopping with my aunt. I tried on a vintage swing coat, blue wool with a lamb collar (I know). I later bought it, was going to anyway but knew I should when an old lady asked about it on her way out. She seemed pleased.
Later, I watched Jeapordy! in a dive bar with Julia. A pitcher of Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale was only seven dollars. Seven dollars! I guessed final jeapordy wrong, the Duke of York, but so did the second place contestant.
All of my suggestions for our first family vacation in ten years - Iceland, Turkey, R.Kelly’s Love Letter cruise - have all been turned town.
