friday morning
Instead of taking a picture like a creeper, I’ll describe the scene in front of me on the blue line: there’s a white man, late 30’s, with two small children. The girl child is wearing silver Mary Janes and the baby has on tiny chucks. The man, who is pushing a stroller that cost approximately half of my month’s income- yes, I googled it. On his coat is a large orange button that says “I am the 99 percent.”
And they were taking up an entire seat with a sweater, which is why I noticed the whole thing to begin with.
I mean, they are riding the train. Gonna be honest- you don’t see a lot of white people with tiny children doing that (which is a whole other conversation). And based on the way the girl is reciting the stops, I suspect they do it often. And this guy’s not at work, I guess. The stroller could be a gift. Or an investment, for all the train-taking.
And the 99 percent is large. I mean, of course. And I get supporting it. And I get that things are hard. I’m being judgy. But as a (white) person (writing this on her iphone) who breathed a huge sigh of relief this morning when her meager paycheck (which she’s lucky to have, which she’s going to spend on driving her car to Connecticut later today) was deposited, it feels somehow wrong. But who am I to judge?
Except the taking up the seat with a sweater is utterly inexcusable.

99% isn’t about rich vs. poor. Just because you have money doesn’t mean that you don’t support the movement for greater wealth distribution. Many 1%-ers who earned their way support the 99% agenda because they realize how hard it’s gotten.
